Again and again, this is a fight over perspective . . .
Crime is down from HISTORIC highs of the pandemic-era when violence, theft and property destruction was at an all time high.
In particular, we have a bit of insight into the motor vehicle theft decline which connects to the INSANE era of the KIA Boyz wherein KC and all of the nation endured a social media-fueled crime wave in which teenagers exploited a missing security feature in millions of 2011–2021 Kia and Hyundai vehicles to steal them using just a USB cable and a screwdriver, recording reckless joyrides to gain viral notoriety on platforms like TikTok.
Ensuing software updates and fewer Kias & Hyundais purchased might be just as responsible for the decline of the trend than anything else . . . Ask around . . . It's very likely that you know somebody who suffered at the hands of the trend and they'll tell you about police reactions and how much city hall helped.
Either way . . .
A crime drop is welcomed but every number offered by city hall deserves scrutiny. So we'll share the data and Mayor Q's latest statement . . .
Now here's the money line . . .
"Intervention works. Community engagement works. Our city, our neighborhoods, our police, and our prosecutors are putting the work in to reach generational lows in crime in Kansas City. There’s always more work to do but we absolutely can have a safer city. Proud of all delivering exceptional improvements for this decade and hopefully well into the future."
