At least according to Mayor Q . . .
DESPITE PETITIONER RHETORIC THIS VOTE WON'T HAVE ANY IMPACT ON KANSAS CITY ROYALS NEW STADIUM MONEY!!!
One more time for the cheap seats . . .
It's our contention that this effort was ALWAYS PART OF CONTROLLED OPPOSITION given that funding for stadiums can always be routed through PortKC or by way of a multitude of legislative maneuvers.
Moreover . . .
Social media scammed voters opposing this scheme with a Facebook group that seemed earnest but was always composed of union and local biz leaders who understood this was a LABOR NEGOTIATION NOT A REAL PROTEST.
Yes, that applies to the first vote "victory" that gave the Chiefs permission to bolt toward bigger bucks in Kansas.
Of course voters are entitled to trust whatever charade the wish . . . In much the same way that this ballot measure is mostly for show:
City officials will be legally banned from advancing, designing or constructing sports stadiums or arenas with 2,500+ seats using material city support unless the public votes on and approves each project first.
Although Missouri Workers Power – the group spearheading the effort to put the Royals project to a public vote – said this ordinance would apply to the new Royals stadium, Mayor Quinton Lucas said otherwise.
The mayor shared a statement Thursday evening, which reads in part:
“Projects already underway, such as Royals Stadium at Crown Center, the Kansas City Current stadium expansion, the Kansas City Symphony’s new South Plaza project, and the Starlight Theater canopy project are not affected by the proposal.”
