Background on celebration . . .
Former President Joe Biden officially commemorated Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021. An increasing number of states and cities have also recognized it — pivoting from a day long rooted in the celebration of explorer Christopher Columbus to one focused on the people whose lives and culture were forever changed by colonialism.
For those who didn't know . . . The lead image features AI imagining my mom's chihuahua in a recent photo of Justice Horn . . . And I'm already searching to see if the gear is available on Amazon but more importantly . . .
Kansas City actively commemorates Indigenous Peoples Day and hasn't really had a Columbus Day party since the 80s.
And so . . . For perspective . . .
We notice Kansas City activist Justice Horn marking his role at the forefront of the effort to reclaim the federal holiday . . . Here's the word:
Today, we celebrate the resilience of our ancestors and Indigenous people everywhere who continue to fight against brutality, erasure, and the theft of their lands.
I’m proud that the City of Kansas City continues to recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day—a resolution I was proud to write. No amount of revisionist history or erasure will change the truth: We were here, we are here, and we aren’t going anywhere. ✊🏽
