Kansas City 2026 El Niño Preview

Given that today's temerpature was strangely near 90 . . . We can't discount strange weather on the horizon.

And so we share a bit of city college meteorology . . .

An El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a fluctuation in both sea surface temperatures and the air pressure of the atmosphere causing trade winds to weaken and stop blowing cold surface waters from east to west Pacific.

“ENSO is a cyclical pattern of unusual warming of tropical Pacific Ocean surface waters,” said Caroline Davies, an associate professor of earth and environmental sciences. “Places that are normally wet experience drought and places that are usually dry get lots of water or snow.”

Kansas City’s winter is predicted to be more tame, with milder temperatures, less snow and more rain, according to Davies.
