Former Kansas Guv Hopes For 'Carter Sweep' Midterms Against GOP

Sent by one of our BEST & BRIGHTEST TKC READERS . . .

This post accurately depicts the American political dialectic and shifting fortunes for elected officials over the years . . . Agree or disagree . .  .The perspective is worthwhile.

Here's the premise . . .

"The Democratic majority that made me Speaker was elected after a wave year that saw Carter sweep to the presidency. But it wasn't just the top of the ticket that succeeded that year. And that is due in large part to Carter's dedicated leadership to build the party from the grassroots – including early visits to states like Kansas. I was lucky enough to meet him during one of these visits and was blown away by so many things about him, but probably most of all was the fact that he planned for Kansas to play a major role in his strategy. He understood the future that was possible by having a nationwide network of enthusiastic, organized support in all 50 states – in urban communities as well as rural areas. I also raise this now because that election year was marked by widespread backlash to the corruption of the Nixon Administration. People picked up and latched on to Carter's wholesome and service-oriented style of leadership, with integrity enough to give up the peanut farm. And my, what a contrast we’re seeing today from the presidency. Exactly 50 years later, we're facing a similar moment, although the level of corruption is far worse.

"If we're serious about breaking today's Republican supermajority, we need to borrow several pages from Carter’s playbook. Because the bottom line is: We Democrats didn't elect two Speakers of the House without a strong part of our caucuses coming from west of Highway 81."
