Critics Condemn Racial Bias In UMKC Star Homicide Coverage

The story of a Kansas City woman gunned down near 42nd & Troost turned even more tragic when it was revealed she was a beloved local volunteer who was formerly a star UMKC volleyball player.

However . . .

In the aftermath we noticed a great deal of antipathy about news coverage from a variety of perspectives.

Some news watchers wanted more detail about her assailants and the circumstances of her demise whilst other shared critical insights into mainstream media disparity given the focus on Rhegan Spiegel, allegedly, above so many other local homicide victims.

Accordingly . . . This quick public comment quote from a local content creator adeptly explains a great deal of the objections we've noticed . . . Check-it:

"Something has deeply bothered me about the overwhelming media coverage of her death.  Her story has been on virtually every local news station, day after day, for one week while other families in Kansas City have also lost loved ones to murder with little or no media attention.

"I am not suggesting Rhegan's murder deserves less attention.  I am asking why other victims haven't received the same attention.

"I imagine nearly everyone in Kansas City that keeps up with the news knows Rhegan's name.  But can anyone name even ONE of the five Black people murdered in Kansas City in the last week?

"Do better, media."
