"The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) went into effect in July 2026, significantly changing how students will pay their tuition this semester.
"Scott Young, director of the financial aid and scholarships office at UMKC, said that the Grad PLUS loan was also eliminated entirely. This loan would have helped graduate and professional students borrow the entire cost of attendance.
"Federal pell grants now check whether students have enough non-federal grants or scholarships to cover the cost of attendance (COA). If students have both, they will no longer be qualified for the need-based grant."
