"A group of independent and immigrant-owned grocers represented by the Multicultural Business Coalition has sued New York City and Mayor Zohran Mamdani to block a plan for five city-owned, subsidized grocery stores. The plaintiffs argue that the taxpayer-backed markets—which intend to sell food staples at a 30% discount—create unfair competition and violate state civil rights protections by threatening minority- and immigrant-owned small businesses. Mayor Mamdani defends the program as a vital step to lower high food costs for everyday residents."
