Kansas City Playlist: Mayor Q Shares Legal Weed Etiquette

Kansas City Mayor Q has shared his opinion on many legal issues over the years with varying degrees of success. 

On the topic of police funding and environmental rules for housing, he has missed the mark. 

However . . .

When it comes to legal weed . . . Mayor Q clearly knows his stuff and a recent polite suggestion on cannabis protocol in public spaces is likely appreciate by many parents. 

Take a peek at a recent post for those who haven't seen it already . . . 

Marijuana users and all other smokers and vapers, please be mindful not to smoke in or near children's playgrounds and play areas. While smoking is legal in Parks spaces, we ask that you be considerate of a smoke-free environment around our kids.

Credit where it's due . . . This is good advice and a reminder that Kansas City has a legacy of politeness to uphold.

And . . . Given that we're in enjoying the last couple of days of a "scumbag summer" that was hotter than most . . . The mayor's missive on legal weed manners inspires our  www.TonysKansasCity.com playlist tonight . . .

There are a lot of fun facts about Weezer's "Hash Pipe" but this is the one that moves past culture war fodder: The iconic, chugging guitar hook was heavily inspired by the classic jazz-noir television theme song for Peter Gunn, composed by Henry Mancini.

A glimpse at somewhat recent hip-hop and how some urban communication has fallen back into hieroglyphs and/or emojis . . . When Young Thug first walked into producer Dun Deal's studio unannounced—wearing a straw hat and a cut-off jacket while boldly declaring he would be the next Lil Wayne—he didn’t write down a single lyric. Instead, Dun Deal revealed that Thug drew pictures on his notepad to map out the song's energy, drawing images like a burning school bus and guns to guide his flow.

A quick bit of fact check info reminds us that the biggest cash crop boom in modern Show-Me State history crosses all demographic lines . . . Missouri's legal cannabis industry is a massive, multi-billion-dollar market that generated roughly $1.57 billion in retail sales. And a nod to red state culture is in order: The legendary country singer and producer Vince Gill loved the cheeky, humorous "Weed Instead Of Roses" track so much that he insisted it be cut for Ashley Monroe's 2013 album Like a Rose, stating it brought a much-needed sense of humor to country music.

A bit of personal blogging for the late night . . . Weed never really appealed to TKC if only because we're already paranoid enough. However, during our youthful antics on the streets of Kansas City's Westside and Midtown corridor, we are pretty sure we heard "Hits From The Bong" at least a few thousand times.

Finally, we finish with a classic and a remembrance of our college days . . . Amid friendly visits to various dorm rooms of college ladies from nearly every demographic, a much younger TKC was surprised to learn that a compact disk copy of LEGEND by Bob Marley was a required part of liberal arts curriculum during the 1990s and very early 2000s. 

Also, we didn't know this until tonight but "Jamming" was Bob Marley’s defiant response to a real-life assassination attempt. In December 1976, unknown gunmen broke into Marley's home in Jamaica and shot him, his wife Rita, and his manager just days before a major peace concert. Everyone miraculously survived, and Marley wrote "Jamming" shortly after while in self-imposed exile in London. The upbeat track includes the pointed, literal lyric: "No bullet could stop us now."
