"Rodriguez appeared in federal court wearing an orange jail jumpsuit, glasses, and shackles, with noticeably long hair and facial hair. His defense attorneys raised concerns about his conditions in detention.

"Prosecutors and defense attorneys strongly disagreed on how fast the case should move, how long the trial will take, and whether it could involve the death penalty. 

"Defense lawyers argued that setting a trial date is premature until prosecutors announce if they will seek execution, while prosecutors argue the court should plan as if capital punishment is on the table."
