Kansas City Playlist: Summer Songs 2026

The start of August begins the summer fade and there's still a lot of work to do . . . 

What we notice going forward . . . 

- Rampant corruption not only in KC proper but across the metro . . .  

- Crime steadily creeping upward despite so many politicos touting lower numbers . . . 

- Small biz hardship that contradicts political chest-thumping ahead of midterms. 

- The public forced to admire so many celebrity FAKE marriages.

- The losing data center fight against the future.  

- Socialists serving as useful idiots in order to distract from our latest Middle-East FOREVER WAR CRUSADE . . .

- KC transit ponzi schemes desperately seeking federal cash to continue their storyline. 

- Pro-sports profiteering from constant hype and Kansas City's obsession with development subsidy.  

Meanwhile . . . 

There's no denying that this was an exceptional summer for music in Kansas City and across the nation. Therefore this TKC playlist is dedicated to a more few banger that will fade in to history just like all of our useless energy for 2026. 

Forgive us for not including your favorite sh*tty local band as we attempt to speak to the pop culture zeitgeist with tonight's www.TonysKansasCity.com playlist . . .

"Homewrecker" by Sombr was released earlier this year but has reached its zenith this summer. We celebrate this song if only because TKC has intentionally and mistakenly told everyone about the line "We sh*t on the fire escape . . ." and hopefully forced more than a few people to erroneously believe that's written into the track.

Yung Miami's viral hit "Spend Dat" earns the title of hip-hop song of the summer and whilst many outlets and fans embraced its carefree energy, it also sparked heavy public debate and criticism from figures like India Arie and Nicci Gilbert over its controversial lyrics glorifying retail theft and hustling.

Drake - Janice STFU isn't one of our faves but it sounds familiar and we can't help but associate it with this summer because it's blasting in the parking lot of every KC metro QT from people who will need hearing aids sometime in the next 10 years.  

For the bridge . . . We offer a bit of nostalgia for the Summer of 1993 and a track that dominated local car stereo systems in what was formerly the most violent year in local history before the COVD/BLM-era outpaced it . . . Of course music fans know that the sample used for the beat was "Footsteps in the Dark" by The Isley Brothers but what we learned tonight is that in the song, Cube raps: "Even saw the lights of the Goodyear Blimp / And it read ‘Ice Cube’s a pimp.’” While originally a fictional flex, Goodyear brought it to life in 2014. In a charity stunt, the blimp flew over Los Angeles flashing that exact message, raising money for at-risk youth.

Finally, we admit that "Choosin' Texas" is inescapable in the summer of 2026. The backstory: Ella Langley's smash hit was partly inspired by a wild real-life story from co-writer Miranda Lambert getting pulled over by police with out-of-state Texas plates, her dog, and a baby kangaroo riding shotgun.
