A debate about the definition of terms and political ideologies . . . Here are the basics:
John Stoer, a fellow at the Yale Journalism Initiative and a contributing writer to several publications, has written this Alter-Net piece that makes a convincing argument about Christian Nationalism.
That argument, essentially, is this: The U.S. is not a Christian nation because “the people who call themselves Christian, especially the supporters of Donald Trump, are often so ignorant of their religion. How can we be a Christian nation when Christians here don't know much about Christianity?”
I find that a compelling contention, though in the stark simplicity of what I just quoted there’s a lot of nuance that’s glossed over. Stoer paints with a really broad brush. But his essential point about ignorance is correct.
