Hospitals and medical building projects have been expanding at a rapid clip, with $28.4 billion in new hospital starts in 2026 and another $30.7 billion across the greater Kansas City area in 2027, according to a ConstructConnect report released at the beginning of the year.

The stress of Covid-19 forced hospital systems to reevaluate their real estate, and many determined that maintenance and upgrades had been deferred too long . . . After assessments, administrators saw “an increased need for more acute care patient beds, driven by the aging baby boomer population.”
