First, let's review the basics regarding deep tensions surrounding the proposed $1.9 billion ballpark project near downtown's Crown Center.
During a heated Kansas City Council finance committee meeting on August 18, 2026, regarding a proposed downtown Royals stadium deal, Darrell Miller, a leader with the Missouri Workers Center, was forcibly ejected from the council chambers and handcuffed by police following a physical altercation.
Miller, who had already testified against the public subsidy, stood up during public comment to object to a perceived double standard. He vocally complained that pro-stadium speakers were being allowed to blow past the strict two-minute speaking limit while opponents were being cut off exactly at two minutes.
After Miller refused to sit down and told security to get their hands off of him, guards grabbed him and dragged him from the council chamber.
The physical altercation spilled out into the City Hall hallway, where security personnel wrestled Miller to the floor and pinned him down. Video footage showed Miller yelling that he could not breathe while being placed in handcuffs.
The Kansas City Police Department reported that Miller was issued a municipal summons for trespassing and assault.
However, we can't help but notice . . .
COUNCIL DUDE DUNCAN BLAMES CITY MANAGER MARIO VASQUEZ FOR THE HOT MESS!!!
Here's the word . . .
"Duncan said the city manager is responsible for making sure security is properly trained. Tuesday’s incident, he said, “shows a complete lack of training.”
"I think Duncan is right. The City Council chamber is a place where it is not uncommon for issues that draw heightened emotion from citizens, and sometimes council members, too.
"Let’s face it: The decisions being made there impact lives in a variety of ways. So yes, it’s expected that people who speak there will sometimes do so with passion. As long as it is not disrespectful or threatening, they should not be dragged out, forced to the floor, handcuffed, struck in the ribs with a police baton and arrested for doing so. That’s what happened to Miller.
"Duncan told me the City Council is calling for the city manager to investigate security procedures and is seeking to have any charges filed against Miller removed."
Even better . . .
Whilst the newspaper is happy to play politics on the topic, they don't offer the full picture and criticism that Duncan is taking in return . . .
More context from insider . . .
"For someone who recently started claiming Hispanic heritage it seems odd that he fought against the first Hispanic City Manager being hired and continues to try and undermine him. Especially when the rest of the community celebrates the moment. It's one thing to have disagreements, it's another to target him as part of a performance."
And so we ask TKC READERS . . .
WHO SHOULD WE BLAME FOR THIS HOT MESS AT CITY HALL?!?
As always, we think the focus should be on better safety and the realization that our social media era works to intensify already tense situations.
