Johnson County School Districts Hire KC Law Firm Amid Special Ed Funding Fight

"The Kansas Public School Funding Coalition announced on Tuesday, August 11, that it hired Lathrop GPM to represent the districts. The firm will be responsible for preparing potential legal action. The coalition claims the state failed to meet its legal obligations to fund K-12 public education and special education.

"The Coalition was formed earlier this year by Blue Valley Schools, the De Soto School District, Olathe Public Schools, and the Shawnee Mission School District. Together, the four districts represent more than 83,000 students in the metro area.

"According to the coalition, the State of Kansas failed to comply with its own law requiring it to fully fund special education at 92 percent of excess costs. The districts claim the funding issue has happened for more than 15 years."
