"The U.S. Department of Education announced on Tuesday that it will partner with the Department of Justice to take action against two Kansas City-area school districts it says violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The threat of legal action comes as the department alleges Olathe and Shawnee Mission public schools failed to comply with FERPA when it refused to strike down policies or plans relating to students’ gender identity.
"However, district leaders maintain their schools have never had such plans, did not violate federal laws and made substantial efforts to comply with the department’s requests — even submitting agreements to the department that were rejected."
