Council dude Duncan and Mayor Q are connected by way of family ties so we don't really buy the recent stadium debate from t-shirt protesters. 

Instead . . . Just like so many previous fake-outs, this argument about the new stadium is most likely a performative gesture designed on the 29th floor. 

Reality check: The demand for a public vote is a red herring and preliminary polling suggests that a new Royals stadium might win if the contest happens at all. Precedent: Remember that "Save KCI" opposition garnered massive online support along with streetcar opponents until the electorate was much more inspired by developer promises. 

But we'll play ball . . .

Kansas City’s long-awaited plan to secure a new Royals stadium near downtown hit a snag on Tuesday when city leaders delayed a vote on a key agreement with the team. The delay, which Mayor Quinton Lucas previewed Monday night, came as the proposal faced criticism from at least one city leader and a coalition of labor groups. Lucas said Monday that the delay was designed “to ensure we hear from even more folks.”

At least one city leader has also attacked the process. Council member Johnathan Duncan, who represents the city’s southwestern edge, wrote a series of social media posts Monday night that called the city’s efforts shameful. “Staff have been working around the clock & through their weekends w/o overtime. All to recklessly rush a generational project & circumvent a vote of the people,” Duncan wrote. “For what? To run a billionaire a $600M welfare check on the backs of City taxpayers for his for profit business.”
