Downtown New Kansas City Royals Stadium Ballot Issue Deadline Coming Soon?!?

Veteran local journalists offered an explanation this week that ALMOST makes sense whilst an inevitable compromise is worked out behind the scenes . . . Check-it:

"Under the city’s charter, the City Council has until Aug. 31 to decide if it will enact the petitioners’ ordinance or let it go to the ballot. The state-imposed deadline for putting a question on the November ballot, on the other hand, is Aug. 25.

"You can see the issue: if the council waits as long as it can, the measure can’t go in November. It’ll have to go before Kansas City voters in 2027, presumably after the city wraps up a construction and lease arrangement with the team.

"Lucas and others think those agreements would make the stadium petition-proof, which may or may not be the case.

"But wait! During the legal collision over Missouri redistricting — and the statewide petition effort to force a vote on that — officials suggested the ballot deadline isn’t really Aug. 25. A court, they say, could order a ballot change until Sept. 8, two weeks after the official deadline.

"That means, if the City Council fails to act, local stadium petitioners could ask a judge to require a November vote on their proposal.""
