WyCo Commish Urges Compassion & Defends Student Privacy Amid Fed Trans Crackdown

Context . . . 

Federal agencies issued an ultimatum demanding that KCKPS roll back its student privacy protections, give parents full access to this information, and restrict accommodations for transgender students under threat of losing federal funding or facing immediate lawsuits. 

Concurrently, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach advocated against these "concealment" policies, arguing they infringe on parental rights.

The U.S. Department of Education has issued multiple official findings and warnings. Most recently, they escalated the situation into a formal legal ultimatum alongside the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

The Directive: The district must completely dismantle its "Transgender Guideline" and grant parents full access to records regarding student gender transitions.The Window: The federal government gave the school district exactly 14 days to comply or face an immediate federal lawsuit.

"Reasonable people can disagree about where to draw legal lines. Those questions will be worked out through the legal process. But no matter your view on the law, I hope we can all agree that every student deserves dignity, compassion, and a place where they can learn without fear.

"My support for protecting student privacy comes from a place of understanding, not division. We should aim for policies that respect parents but also recognize that each child’s situation is different.

"Let’s approach this with compassion, listen to one another, and keep the well-being of our young people as the main focus of this conversation."
