Special Interests Dominate Search For New Kansas City Police Chief

In the very near future we start the contentious search for a new top cop that ALWAYS comes down to which faction can most effectively deploy political pressure to push their favorite candidate forward. 

Despite constant whining about "local control" the Mayor has MOST OF THE POWER here with an ability to influence the commish and advocate for his fave. 

As always . . .

Expect more than a bit of political flexing in order to achieve the desired result. 

And here's what we can say that other news outlets aren't allowed to mention until our blog conversation makes it "safe" for them . . .  

In this process, Kansas City Black community leaders always apply pressure for Black candidates. 

Right or wrong, there's no use denying the political reality. 

The point here . . . 

Kansas City enters into yet another racially-charged debate wherein most local news outlets aren't allowed to talk about how decisions in local leadership REALLY develop.  

Nevertheless, we share a couple of notes that at least come close to informing the public about the process. Take a peek . . . 

"The Kansas City police chief is chosen by the Board of Police Commissioners — not directly by the city. The commissioners are appointed by the governor and approved by the state Senate, with the mayor also serving on the board. That state-controlled structure has been in place since 1939 — more than 85 years.

"The last time Kansas City went through this process in 2022, a coalition of businesses and faith organizations developed a community engagement effort that included surveys, listening sessions and multiple interview rounds. The Kansas City Chamber reported 350 people attended those listening sessions . . ."
