Kansas City World Cup Safety Win Despite Deadly Mass Shootings?!?

Kansas City elected officials move quickly to overlook an uptick in homicides and mass shootings during the World Cup so that they can declare victory and highlight lower REPORTED violence amid the global event.

However . . .

By way of thoughtful comments, TKC readers believe that World Cup priorities put public safety on the back burner as far as locals were concerned.

 Consider . . . Insiders tell us . . .

When a major incident or large event ties up all available units, a supervisor will authorize "Priority Calls Only" restrictions. During this time, police will completely stop sending officers to minor, non-emergency complaints (like parking issues or delayed property theft reporting) to keep personnel clear for life-threatening emergencies.

This comment, edited for clarity, explains the phenomena at the street level . . .

"Man, this is pure garbage. KCPD straight up ghosted our neighborhoods and left us to rot while they played nanny for FIFA. People were calling in gunfire and literal violent assaults in our part of town, and we got absolutely nothing but busy signals and radio silence because every single cop was shoved down at the stadiums and tourist zones. They care way more about looking good for international soccer tourists than saving local lives. We are paying taxes for protection, but they completely abandoned the residents who actually live here just to suck up to the World Cup crowd. Disgusting."

For instance . . .

Now that it's over we feel comfortable in KCPD expressing some fear that thieves could have stolen most of the Northland and there wouldn't have been ANYBODY to stop them given the focus on protecting World Cup, fan fest and entertainment venues.

Meanwhile . . .

We'll share more optimistic context whilst highlighting relevant info . . .

According to data from Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson's office, there was a 21% decrease in case referrals. KCPD data shows nonfatal shootings in June were down by 49%.

"We are seeing a low in our violent crime, including homicides and nonfatal shootings," said Lace Cline, assistant city manager of public safety. "There is that focused deterrence effort, SAVE KC. So last year, we saw a decline in group violence and continue to see that decline."

However, Kansas City wasn’t in the clear of high-profile crime with the highway shooting spree and mass shooting near 18th and Vine.

The prosecutor's office received 14 homicide cases during the tournament, compared to nine at this time in 2025.

For the record . . .

At the outset of the event there was also a mass shooting near England's base camp that Mayor Q attempted to downplay.

And then . . .

That same weekend two dudes were shot dead at the Westport QT.

And so . . .

Yes, Kansas City's World Cup was a public safety victory if you don't count all the mass shootings and homicides.
