Kansas City Mayor Q Shares Election Guide: Contrary Indicator?!?

Credit where it's due . . .

Kansas City's head honcho saved us a bit of trouble for the upcoming election. 

More to the point . . .

With so many online denizens attempting to peddle influence for an upcoming vote, Mayor Q holds the biggest local audience and bully pulpit so his words & recommendations outrank nearly all locals. 

Accordingly, that offers us a chance to argue about his selections.

ELECTION GUIDE FOR AUGUST 4, 2026

General idea: when in doubt, vote NO on state amendments in MO and KS and vote YES on all Kansas City questions.  

MISSOURI AMENDMENTS: 1 (Yes), 2 (No), 4 (No), 5 (No). 

MO Amendment 1 (Parks) -- YES

Sales tax for state parks around since the 1980s. State parks are important, vital, and among us. This is good. Vote Yes. 

MO Amendment 2 (County Assessor) -- NO

The state requiring local counties to elect their tax assessors. 

I am pretty much always against state control of local choices. That's how I'm voting here. Jackson County already requires an elected assessor by vote of the people starting in 2028. No need to open the door for more state laws controlling our choices. Vote No. 

MO Amendment 4 (Limiting Petition Rights) -- NO

Requiring a majority of voters in each congressional district to approve petitions to amend the constitution.  Kansas Citians, this is them taking away your rights and limiting your voices. We are the largest City in Missouri. There's no reason our signatures, our votes, and our voices shouldn't count for the same as the voice of someone elsewhere in Missouri just because we live in a city. The goal here is to ensure we can never get an issue on the ballot again. Don't let them take away a key tool of people-led power. Vote no. 

MO Amendment 5 (Income Tax Repeal/Sales Tax Increase) -- NO

Repealing the state income tax and permitting increases in sales taxes. Rehashing the failed Sam Brownback tax plan from Kansas a few years back, this is the worst idea to come from Missouri government in years. In addition to bankrupting the state budget, it would require a huge hike in sales taxes and use taxes (online purchases), making your daily costs go up rapidly and defunding basic services. Worse roads, worse schools, worse courts. Generally, making Missouri less effective at what it already underperforms in. Bury this idea in the trash heap of history.  Vote no. 

KANSAS CITY QUESTIONS -- Vote YES on All.  

KC Question 1 (Housing Trust Fund) -- YES

Authorizing $100M in no-tax-increase bond funds to support affordable housing in Kansas City. This renews funding for our affordable housing trust fund, which since 2022 has built thousands of units for homeless, low-and moderate-income families across the City. Vote YES. 

KC Question 2 (Historic City Buildings) -- YES

Authorizing $100M in no-tax-increase bond funds to support repair and upkeep of City buildings constructed before 1950 to ensure ongoing viability for structures like Municipal Auditorium and City Hall. This allows the City to maintain key historic infrastructure in our city, ensuring use for generations to come. Vote YES. 

KC Question 3 (Central City Economic Development) -- YES

Renewing an existing sales tax to support development in historically underserved communities. Since its creation, it has spurred 60 economic development projects, $89M in spending on the East Side of Kansas City, more than 1,000 new housing units, and my favorite, created over 700 early childcare seats. This is rebuilding our city and deserves renewal. Vote YES. 

KC Question 4 (Water Bonds) -- YES

KC Question 5 (Sewer Bonds) -- YES

These questions would authorize no-property-tax-increase bonds to fund water and sewer improvements in the City, as we continue to fund system rehab, reduce flooding in our neighborhoods, and build a safer cleaner water and sewer system. This is responsible and core government work. Vote YES. 

KANSAS CONST'L AMENDMENT -- VOTE NO

For my friends in the surrounds, I got you. Your constitutional amendment would change the current nonpartisan (i.e., fair) judge selection process to a popular election. The goal is simple--to make political what currently is not, making judicial elections referenda on school funding, reproductive rights, and whatever political issues exist in the moment. Kansas has good courts and good judges. Don't let them take that from you.  Vote NO.  

In sum: 

Missouri: 1 (Yes), 2 (No), 4 (No), 5 (No). 

Kansas City: YES ON ALL. 

Kansas: Amendment (No), 

CANDIDATES?  

I may weigh in.  Maybe.  For now, I'm about these issues.
