The Kansas City council on Thursday approved an ordnance establishing new speed limits, age requirements and penalties for riders user electric-powered transportation devices.
Under the ordinance, riders will be limited to speeds of 15 mph or less on sidewalks and under 20 mph on bike lanes and shared-use trails.
Riders must also be at least 16 years old to operate a device capable of traveling more than 20 mph, while riders must be at least 12 years old to use a device that can reach 20 mph.
The ordinance also requires all riders under 18 to wear a helmet.
