"More people signed on to run Airbnbs, VRBOs and other short-term home rentals in anticipation of an influx of visitors. With more places in the market, occupancy rates actually went down — but prices went up.

"Kansas City can boast about an 88% increase in year-over-year revenue for short-term rentals due to the World Cup but not because of an increase in demand.

"According to a study by AirDNA, a data analytics platform for short-term rentals, the increase came from hiked-up prices.

"The number of available rentals surged 48% over last year. But since demand was only up 20%, occupancy rates declined."
