One of the problems that the DSA success has had is that it makes it even more difficult for conservative Republicans, like Rep. Mark Alford (R., Mo.) to work across the aisle, which he has done despite at-times large ideological divides between him and his Democratic counterparts, like Rep. Jonathan Jackson (D., Ill.). 

“I came here, and one of my goals was to establish relationships with Democrats and build common ground without abandoning my conservative values, but the direction that they are taking by welcoming socialists and communists is a problem,” Alford explained. “There are going to be members who take the Oath of Office who have made themselves to be enemies of America . . ."
