We start out with more local crime news for context . . .
Over the past few weeks we've noticed an uptick in local homicides and last night's shooting death seems to confirm the traditional Spring/Summer trend.
So far we count 60 homicides compared to 76 at this time last year. The lower number is encouraging but we've got a long summer ahead of us with a spate of mass shootings & convenience store murders already confronting Kansas City.
For now . . . We look at the latest report KCPD is sharing with local media along with more documentation:
Homicide 5800 Block of Wabash
Just after 11pm officers on patrol in the area of 55th and Prospect heard the sound of gunshots to the south. Simultaneously 911 received calls for sounds of shots in the area of 58th and Wabash. Officers responded to investigate.
As officers were investigating 911 received an updated call of a shooting in front of a residence in the 5800 block of Wabash.
On arrival to that location officers located an adult male shooting victim unresponsive in the street in front of a residence there.
Officers called for EMS who declared the victim deceased at the scene.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators are at the scene now. They are processing the scene for evidence and canvassing for witnesses.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was in front of the residence with one or more additional people when they heard the sound of gunshots nearby. They then realized the victim was struck by the gunfire.
There is no information on suspect description and no one is in custody at this time.
If anyone was in this area and heard or saw anything or has any information, and has not yet talked to police, they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
