"Pope Leo, in his first encyclical released a few weeks ago, declares this: 'Today, more than ever, without prejudice to the right to self-defense in the strictest sense, it is important to reaffirm that the ‘just war’ theory, which has all too often been used to justify any kind of war, is now outdated.'
"Indeed, Pope Leo has emerged as someone who has close to zero use for war. As he said recently, God 'does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.' I’m not sure how he knows that, but that’s what he says . . .
"People who follow any of the world’s great religions have, I think, a special responsibility to adopt, in general, an anti-war stance and the policies that would promote that. That’s because those religions teach the high value of human life and the duty each person has to protect anyone’s life.
"And yet, history shows that God often gets drafted into this or that army to help destroy this or that group of people."
