Jackson County Starts Yet Another Courtroom Property Tax Slapfight

Jackson County Circuit Court records show that the Independence School District and Fort Osage R-I School District filed the petition on Tuesday, June 16.

The suit names Jackson County, County Executive Phil LeVota and County Collector Scott Lakin as defendants.

The lawsuit now seeks a preliminary and permanent injunction, declaratory relief and damages.

"Jackson County Executive Phil LeVota responded to the school districts’ lawsuit over the county's property tax credit plan by stating he will "continue to give taxpayers relief regardless of this demand." The Independence and Fort Osage school districts filed the lawsuit, demanding the county stop issuing tax credits for 2023 and 2024."
