Today's reminder that trying to please everybody never does . . .
As sports commentator and Kansas City native Eric Wahl posted in response, “The Royals org isn’t wishing you a happy Pride or saying they support Pride directly; they’re saying their LGBTQAI+ fans are proud to be ‘a Royal.’”
During Pride Month, no one is marching to celebrate George Brett’s right to marry. To be clear, we fully support Mr. Brett’s marriage but it’s not what we’re focused on here.
Adding to the odd messaging of the post, the Royals Twitter account added the passive-voiced “A sport enjoyed and loved by all.”
The whole thing came across as if the Royals were trying to check off the “made Pride Month post” box on their to-do list without specifying who that month was celebrating — possibly in order to avoid engaging with homophobic and transphobic members of their fanbase on social media.
One look at the replies reveals Twitter’s trademark cesspool of anti-gay slurs, threats to cancel season tickets, and misspellings of words that are two letters long.
