Congressman Cleaver Celebrates SCOTUS Birthright Citizenship Win

More than any other topic this week . . . We notice conservatives across the nation denouncing today's ruling whilst vilifying Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

As always, we search for a local angle and Congressman Cleaver's statement today brings the decision back to Kansas City in a way that's far more enjoyable for public discussion than all of our exotic foodie options, blame games after some horrific crime OR cheap labor that EVERYBODY uses (knowingly or not) always readily available at any local hardware store parking lot . . .

Even better . . .

This topic always gets an eye-roll from TKC if only because precious few of our progressive & conservative friends understand Latino culture and multi-generational communities who are more than happy to close the door behind themselves and don't mind living with political contradictions or the absence of ideology consistency.

Translation: Silly questions deserve silly answers.

Now here's the word from our congressman and more newsie perspective if only to engage any of our visitors tonight . . .

"The 14th Amendment settled this question long ago. I'm pleased the Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship and rejected efforts to chip away at one of our Constitution’s most fundamental guarantees. Our laws, and our democracy, are strongest when we honor the Constitution, not attempt to rewrite it."

In fairness to some of our JoCo readers . . . We wanted to update with the constitutional considerations of a favorite Kansas City weather dude turned JoCo, Kansas State Senator Mike Thompson . . .

"Unlike Chief Justice Roberts and others on the court, Thomas and Alito are consistent in their correct decisions based on historical intent and the constitution. Their explanation on opinion on the case are required reading for anyone who doesn't understand why the 14th Amendment was crafted the way it was.  It was solely to allow slaves to be considered US Citizens, and to protect their rights...not to allow "birth tourism" as is happening in the United States."
