LL Cool J is an iconic American rapper, actor, and author born James Todd Smith, whose stage name stands for "Ladies Love Cool James". 

Coined by his friend Mikey D at age 16, the name was designed to help his music career and reflect his desire to be popular with women. He is a trailblazing hip-hop artist known for early hits like "I Need a Beat" and "Rock the Bells," and his name was shortened to LL Cool J by producer Rick Rubin for his Def Jam Recordings label.
