KC Experience: Soft Clubbing at The Museum of Kansas City - IN Kansas City Magazine
Corinthian Hall is the serious-looking mansion at the center of The Museum of Kansas City. Its stone architecture, similar to the Nelson-Atkins and Union Station, looks like it could survive the apocalypse. So it's either funny or fitting that, once a month, people go "soft clubbing" in its basement.

This is the OPEN THREAD for right now . . . HOWEVER, if you're reading this blog on Cinco De Mayo night we're sharing just a bit more by way of a shortie-playlist apropos for our second favorite American drinking "holiday" . . .
It would be too easy to offer up Suavecito again . . . So we dig a bit deeper into the archives for this classic: "Viva Tirado" by El Chicano (1970): An instrumental jazz-rock fusion that became an massive hit in Los Angeles. Its distinctive groove became a symbol of Brown Pride and is one of the most recognizable "Eastside Sound" tracks.
Even more off the beaten path . . . Chicano Batman is a psychedelic soul band from Los Angeles, formed in 2008. They're best known for a genre-bending sound that blends 1960s/70s Brazilian Tropicália, slow-jam soul, and surf-rock cumbia. "Black Lipstick" (2015) serves as Chicano Batman's biggest hit. It is their most-streamed track, with over 36 million plays on Spotify and millions of views on YouTube.
What we've always loved about Chicano culture is that it can thrive ANYWHERE . . . Sure, we've got more than a few poseurs in the Crossroads but far, far away we can't help but admire the Viet-Chicanos and the Cholo Barbers in Vietnam.
Accordingly, our final Cinco De Mayo song isn't Latino-themed at all but it should resonate with the last remaining Westsiders and denizens of the Dotte who have a cool grandpa who likely has a criminal record.
"I'm Your Puppet" (1966) by James & Bobby Purify was a massive 60s soul hit, peaking at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 . . . The song was nominated for a Grammy, sold over a million copies . . . Robert Lee Dickey (the "Bobby" in the duo) actually despised the song and was unhappy singing it. Dickey claimed he sang the song for 23 hours straight in the studio, which led to his dislike of it. Alternatively, TKC has listened to this song about 1,000 times over the years at just about every kind of gathering and we still enjoy it . . .
Thanks for reading today . . . This post was written on Cinco De Mayo night soooooooo, the next update might not be until around noon.
