Helling Explains Kansas & Missouri Politicos Property Tax Relief FAIL

We thinks it's mostly because both sides are FULL OF IT . . . But here's a more thoughtful analysis from our second favorite local pundit . . .

"Enacting major property tax reform is proving to be fiendishly difficult, and our state governments are not equipped to do anything hard.

"Fixing property taxes may be the hardest task of all.

"Property taxes are collected from a guess of what a home or business is worth. They’re also based on unrealized gains: your taxes go up because your home is worth more, even though you don’t actually get the higher value in cash until you sell your home.

"That’s why property taxes are so unpopular. Yet, by some estimates, 70% of local government revenue comes from property taxes. Abolish them and the alternatives are difficult and, for most of us, untenable."
