Amid all of the congratulatory news coverage and developer-driven hype, our blog community noticed persistent criticism of Mayor Q was the most common reaction from many social media denizens. This fact-of-life likely escaped all but the closest Kansas City news watchers amid so much irrational exuberance over a new Royals stadium that will replace Hallmark corporate headquarters and create yet another taxpayer subsidized entertainment district at the Crown Center complex.
And here's the debate . . .
KANSAS CITY VOTERS CAN'T REJOICE OVER THE NEW ROYALS STADIUM PLAN WITHOUT GIVING MAYOR Q CREDIT!!!
Mayor locals have a problem with that math but it's just basic logic . . . Mayor Q was integral to this plan and if locals support it than they're forced to acknowledge the city hall participation.
Meanwhile . . . TKC's Chicano fatalism understands that in the end nothing ever works out. But I digress . . .
In the face of constant critics . . . Here was the mayor's reaction . . .
"I am proud of the steps we have taken to build a strong future for Royals baseball in Downtown Kansas City," Lucas said. "The Royals are staying home, and they are building a new home at the center of our region's culture, arts, vibrance and entrepreneurial success. This is the best in public-private partnership — funded by baseball and development with no new tax increases, and with the kind of conservative fiscal management Kansas City families deserve. We are the visionaries of today, and we are changing Kansas City for the better."
However . . .
This isn't yet a done deal and there are significant challenges to overcome . . . The petition effort to stop KCMO subsidy and force a vote might be a long shot but the financing remains the most important question.
And so we ask . . .
WILL THE NEW ROYALS STADIUM STAND AS MAYOR Q'S CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT OR ULTIMATE FAIL THAT ENDS UP BANKRUPTING KANSAS CITY?!?
Consider . . .
In a town with a municipal hiring freeze, a structurally unbalanced budget and stagnant population numbers . . . It's not unreasonable to question the financial wisdom of this move.
Here's a quick look at some of the financial challenges . . .
While the city has approved up to $600M in financing, significant funding questions remain regarding state contributions and final private investment amounts.
Kansas City authorized up to $600M in bonds and tax increment financing.
The Royals report a plan for over $2B in private investment, but specific figures from owner John Sherman are not yet fully solidified.
Uncertainties persist about the exact Missouri state contribution, particularly given a projected $2B state revenue shortfall in 2027, and whether Jackson County will contribute financially.
