Maybe the locals are politely ignoring today's festivities given that Kansas City has been killing the planet as of late.
A few trends to prove our point . . .
- Kansas City is cutting bus routes and transit funding whilst so much ATA money remains dedicated to speculated development.
- Obviously, sports teams ditching Truman Sports Complex and building new stadiums is an environmental disaster that create an EPIC carbon footprint with no incentive but higher profits for the super rich.
- Kansas City continues to suffer poor water system management: Stormwater runoff carries pollutants like pesticides, fertilizers, and animal waste into local waterways. It's a longstanding joke that Brush Creek has the water quality of a dirty toilet. Additionally, a high percentage of impervious surfaces (sidewalks, roads) increases the risk of flash flooding.
It's not all doom and gloom . . .
- Canopy Cover KC is a city-wide initiative aiming to increase Kansas City’s tree canopy from 31% to 35% by 2026 to reduce urban heat, improve air quality, and manage stormwater. The plan includes planting 10,000 new trees—supported by a $12 million U.S. Forest Service grant—and implementing stricter, protective ordinances for existing tree sites.
- Given the circumstances of the current economy and ongoing fuel spikes . . . Electric bikes have become a popular, practical transportation alternative for a growing number of KCMO low-income individuals, primarily serving as a cost-effective car replacement that offers higher speed and lower effort than traditional bicycles.
- Local activists are encouraging bus ridership and even building better benches for people who aren't killing the planet with a gas guzzling SUV.
To be fair . . .
Locals attempting to save the Earth probably won't offset so much damage around the globe from the ravages of constant military conflict . . . BUT . . . That's no reason to stop trying to enjoy the conversation of optimistic hippie ladies on a coffee date.
