Jackson County Legislator Sean Smith Sponsors Property Tax Payback Moratorium

Update on the continued fight over busted assessments . . . Here's worthwhile courthouse action that deserves attention . . .

From Jackson County Legislator Sean Smith's Office . . .

Following the release of the Missouri State Auditor’s report publishing the investigative findings of the Jackson County Assessment Appeals processes, Sean Smith has sponsored legislation establishing a moratorium on the tax sales of properties that are tax delinquent, if those delinquencies include 2023 Assessments. Missouri state law allows the county to auction off properties that are tax delinquent to investors, but due to the flawed assessments, deeply deficient appeals processes, delays in complying with State Tax Commission order and continuing taxpayer confusion stemming from those issues; Smith says it’s time to put a pause on that. After multiple court rulings, a formal order from the State Tax Commission and the conclusion of the auditor’s report, Smith believes assessment reform and review of BOE policies need to be undertaken immediately.  In the meantime, it would be unfair to continue tax sales due to delinquencies.
