Here is the report that police are sharing with local media . . .
Homicide 2000 block of Broadway
This morning, just after 4:15 AM off-duty officers working at the Town Topic restaurant heard several sounds of gunshots coming from a parking lot directly south of the business. Officers quickly responded to the sound of gunfire and observed several groups of individuals involved in an interaction that escalated into shots fired.
Officers immediately relayed to dispatch a shooting had occurred and provided details on people and vehicles believed to be involved that were fleeing from the area. Additional officers were summoned to the scene and assisted with locating and detaining several individuals for further questioning. One off duty officer was able to detain an armed individua while the additional officer directed their focus to an adult male who had been struck by gunfire in the parking lot and began rendering medical aid.
EMS responded and transported the victim to an area hospital for treatment. Hospital staff notified officers the victim had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel have responded to the scene to begin collecting evidence and gathering witness statements. This incident is being investigated as a homicide and is ongoing at this time.
