At the end of last year Mayor Q and other public officials bragged abut "progress" in lowering the KCMO homicide count that had reached a record high 2023 when the quotient of cowtown killing was higher than at any point in recorded history.
As TKC readers often remind us . . .
The tenure of Mayor Q has been the bloodiest in local history and despite recent fluctuations, the level of local violence continues to outpace American cities of similar size.
In fact . . .
February concluded with a spate of shootings along with a deadly mass shooting that claimed the lives of two woman — This is notable because colder winter months are often when KC earns a great deal of progress against local crime rates . . .
With that context, we wanted to document the latest local shooting and the 21st homicide recorded so far this year . . . Here is info that police are sharing with local media . . .
Homicide 1200 block of Askew
This afternoon just after 4:30pm officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 1200 block of Askew on a shooting call.
On arrival officers were led into an apartment inside the building. There they located an adult male shooting victim unresponsive. Officers called for EMS into the scene who declared the victim deceased here at the scene.
Homicide detectives have responded for investigation; they are canvassing for witnesses and working with crime scene investigators to gather all of the available evidence.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a caller responded to the apartment and observed the victim injured and unresponsive inside. The caller then called 911 for police and ambulance.
There are not any suspects in custody at this time.
If anyone was in the area around the building and heard or saw anything or has any information, they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
