Should have had this for Sunday but BEST & BRIGHTEST TKC READERS noticed quite a few people arguing the topic on social media.
Here are the basics . . .
"Attached is a letter that was sent to a church, received within the last few days. County Executive Phil LeVota told me that it was sent to 800 churches, asking them to provide evidence to request or maintain their tax-exempt status . . .
"I have not been able to find another county in the state that requires this level of review just to maintain tax-exempt status. The state law requires only periodic review by the County of not-for-profits for them to keep their exempt status. Jackson County goes way beyond that.
"I have told Mr. LeVota several times that it is fine to require this documentation for new churches, but to ask of it again from churches that already have the status, that is unnecessary."
