Independence Petition Push Back Against AI Data Center Tax Breaks Rejected

We can only hope voters will remember this slap in the face when the next elections come along.

Here's the aftermath . . .  

"Thursday, the city of Independence rejected a referendum effort aimed at challenging plans for this large-scale data center.

"After the council voted to approve the data center on Monday, opponents filed notice for a referendum Tuesday, but now the city says the referendum can't move forward . . . The city said ordinances tied to specific contracts take effect immediately and, under the city charter, cannot be challenged through a referendum.

"Opponents strongly disagree."

"It doesn't help our residents. Yeah. So I will continue to do what I can," said Lorie Butt, opponent of the data center.
