"Despite the fact that Jews historically vote 70 or so percent Democratic, Republicans have historically been more pro-Israel. Only in recent years has there emerged an openly expressed wariness on the Right about our relationship with Israel—a wariness that in some circles borders on hostility.

"At the risk of generalization, the core argument of the dissenting Right is that backing Israel—at great cost, no less—is not and has never been in America’s best interests. Most recently, of course, these critics argue that we attacked Iran to protect Israel’s interests not our own. I would disagree with that premise, but it is not an unreasonable argument.

"The one variable that critics fail to address is what happens if we withdraw our support from Israel, and its enemies prevail. We have a good idea of what will happen to the Israelis. The events of October 7 gave us all a sneak preview . . ."
