At the risk of unintentionally causing any distress . . . It's better to share our honest perspective about how politics and tragedy are REALLY unfolding in Kansas City rather than let clueless political operatives play guessing games.
Context . . .
Lisa Lopez-Galvan was shot and killed at the end of the Chiefs’ victory parade at Union Station in 2024 and her tragic death resonated across Kansas City and the world. Shamefully, this week one of the shooters in the melee was given a "wrist slap" sentence of two years and he'll probably be home before Christmas.
The response of the Lopez-Galvan family has become a point of contention and TKC thinks it's kinda crass to bring them into it. We all grieve in our own way and putting them on front street in the aftermath of their loss is a very cruel calculation. We stick by that BUT . . . There is a local political angle worth explaining and it's also worth repeating that in this post we're ONLY talking about people in the public eye or those who are seeking public office . . .
Full disclosure . . . This blog (and many other local Latinos) had more than a bit of beef/critical questions for Lee's Summit power player Beto Lopez and his role in a takeover of the Westside's beloved Guadalupe Center BUT after the tragic shooting death of his sister . . . Any criticism directed his way seems unimportant given that none of it is likely to change an otherwise important organization that continues to do a lot of good for KC.
Nevertheless. . .
This is our point for those who can forgive all of our backstory/context . . .
We contend it's not unreasonable to believe that Beto Lopez and his run for Mayor in Lee's Summit precludes harsh criticism about this week's Jackson County plea deal from the family.
Or, at the very least, it's worth (respectfully) considering the conflict confronting them.
Again . . .
The family DOESN'T OWE ANYBODY ANYTHING after the loss they've suffered.
In fact . . . They have noted their objections and it's not their responsibility to re-litigate the case in the media.
But in world that demands focus, attention and clear statements . . . We can only hope that raising this valid concern helps to explain the reserved and seemingly stoic response in the aftermath of the tragedy and widely-criticized prosecutorial decision given that far more uncaring political pundits demand everyone to join them in hyper-partisan and enraged outcry.
Translation: Not everybody needs to be a clown for the Internets and as time goes on TKC respects that decision more and more . . .
And so . . .
Here's more context and reporting from people who think they know but don't . . .
Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson's statement goes on to quote the family in a passage that makes it appear they’re at peace with the two-year, time-served sentence . . . Yet, the family went on to say they opposed the plea deal Johnson’s office struck . . . “We are saddened by the outcome of the plea agreement,” the family wrote. “This was not the resolution we desired and had hoped that the case would proceed to trial so that a jury could hear the evidence and have the opportunity to make the decision.”
Johnson held a press conference Tuesday to explain the plea deal . . .
