Again . . .
For the record, NOBODY has done more for Westport in all of Kansas City history than beloved neighborhood leader Bill Nigro.
He is a legend, a small business advocate and one of the greatest supporters of Midtown Kansas City.
Accordingly . . . Bill was nice enough to confirm his recent artfully crafted comment to TKC and we wanted to make sure it gets more attention today . . . Here's the word:
Kansas City Water Commentary From Bill Nigro
In 1978 I rented the Mill St right of way so I could obtain a beer license. My lot started at Westport road going south to 42nd st. My first complaint of flooding and washed-up cars in my lot was in 1980 and I immediately called my councilman and city to fix the problem. I met with the city and was shown a simple fix that is similar to phase one of our current problem/fix. The city never did anything and I met with them again in the late 1980's, and again in the early 90s, again in the late 1990s and again around 2005 before I threw in the towel and gave up.
The FIX was always the same and I was assured that Westport Road would only be closed a few days. I met with the head of the Water dept, Wes Minder before Covid with my construction expert and he agreed that the phase 1 plan would probably fix the problem. It was then a 2 million dollar fix and was handed off the Burns and Mac engineers/architects and was blown into a $22 million dollar project. I know that they work on commission, so here we are with a DEVASTATING PROJECT that has crippled the small businesses in Westport.
What a total WASTE of money to fix a problem that should have affected no one.
KCMO, PLEASE OPEN WESTPORT ROAD TO EAST-WEST ACCESS!
You have crippled access to Westport for over 5 months already. I was told last week by the planners that the Westport/ Mill Street intersection could not be open until before the World Cup. My construction expert viewed it and said it could be open immediately if they really cared to work with the neighborhood. WAKE UP CITY HALL! Westport doesn't deserve this kind of irresponsible treatment. Westport is owed reparations for the devastation in sales that you have caused!
