Man Shot Dead Near Vacant Lot: Third Kansas City Homicide This Week

We linked this report earlier in the Crime Scene section but it's important to draw more attention to because the latest local killing reveals deadly violence trending in Kansas City earlier in the year despite some important cold weather progress to keep this year's number lower.

Here is the report police are sharing with local media along with further investigation:

Homicide 20th and Monroe

Tonight just after 5:30pm officers were dispatched to 20th and Monroe on a sound of shots call in the area. 911 received multiple additional calls of sound of shots and eventually one call reporting a shooting victim down in a wooded area of a series of vacant lots in the 2000 block of Monroe.

On arrival officers made their way into the vacant lots and located an adult male shooting victim unresponsive there.

Officers rendered aid and called for EMS. EMS responded and took over aid. They eventually declared the victim deceased here at the scene.

Homicide detectives are now here conducting investigation and canvassing for witnesses. Crime scene investigators are processing the scene for evidence.

Preliminary indication indicates the shooting occurred on 20th street between Askew and Monroe and the victim then ran to the south where he was located.

If anyone was in the area and heard or saw anything or has any information they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
