Schmidt, who previously served as Kansas attorney general, then turned to immigration enforcement and border security. He recalled stories of noncitizens who committed violent crimes.
"I want to do something that's been rare here today, General," Schmidt said. "I want to ask you about public policy. Donald Trump won't be president forever. I would like to lock in some of these gains we have made in public safety."
