Former Kansas City Council member and former interim Police Board Of Commissioner Heather Hall gives local voters a lot to think about with her words following a politically-charged controversy over her tenure.
Ultimately, Guv Kehoe withdrew Heather Hall's nomination after Missouri Democrats attempted to leverage the appointment with longstanding demands for "local control" and resistance to the GOP super-majority overall.
Never mind that there isn't a single person in Kansas City who claims that Ms. Hall wasn't uniquely qualified for the job and police would be lucky to have her serving the community as a Commissioner.
Most importantly . . .
Missouri Democratic Party resistance against Heather Hall as a police board commissioner overlooked her exceptional LOCAL credentials and put partisan politics over public safety.
As a blog that backs some (but not all) progressive issues like collective bargaining and the demand for better healthcare than what the GOP are begrudgingly willing to advocate . . . We can't help but be disappointed by this flex that took aim at the wrong target and ultimately provided a setback to the growing KCMO Northland community.
Also worth noting . . .
We noticed local dead-tree news coverage of the issue was OVERWHELMINGLY BIASED AGAINST HALL and only conservative talker Pete Mundo did the work of getting her side of the story.
In fact . . .
Reading today's statement from Heather Hall we can infer that The Kansas City Star didn't bother to get a hold of her for a quote and seemed to take their "reporting" from talking points issued by Missouri Democrats.
Again, that's something less than "journalism" from KC's almost daily paper and we wanted to highlight a quote on the topic before we shared Heather Hall's statement in full and in fairness . . .
"I am disappointed that Senator Nurrenbern chose not to support the voices of her constituents, despite the significant outreach in favor of my appointment. I believe that support for law and order requires listening to the people we are elected to serve.
"I also am disappointed by some of the recent media coverage surrounding this process. As someone with a degree in journalism, I value accuracy, fairness and balance. It is concerning when reporting relies on insinuation rather than verified facts, or when attempts to seek comment are claimed but never made. Honest journalism is essential to public trust, especially in matters of public service."
