Controversial KCPD Resignation: Adding Up Human Costs & Legal Bills

Friday concluded one of the most costly and contentious tenures in modern Kansas City Police history. 

There are fierce advocates on both sides of the debate over deadly use of force. However, what's not up for discussion is the EPIC pricetag that accumulated in both dollar terms and human loss . . . 

Here's a quick roundup:  

The families of the victims filed a lawsuit against the police department. The lawsuit was settled for more than $3 million.

A $65,000 settlement was paid in a separate case where he was accused of using excessive force during a 2022 arrest.

A $10 million lawsuit was filed in federal court in KCMO against the Board of Police Commissioners in the shooting death of Donnie Sanders.

THE OFFICER shot and killed Sanders after a brief vehicle chase and confrontation between the two men.

It was later revealed that Sanders was unarmed.

The case was settled with the BOPC paying Sanders estate $300,000.
