"These ill-trained, trigger-happy ICE and Customs Patrol agents have been given free rein by the trump regime to fire on protesters and observers. Vice President JD Vance all but greenlit such actions when, following the killing of Renee Good by an ICE agent, he said ICE agents were 'protected by absolute immunity' from prosecution.
"That, of course, is not the law. In typical trump regime fashion—don’t believe the evidence of your eyes or ears—Vance now denies having said that, although it’s on tape for all the world to see and hear.
"Federal officials can, in fact, be prosecuted for violations of state laws, albeit within certain limits. When they act beyond the scope of their duties or violate federal law, states may prosecute them. (They can also be be held liable for damages in civil suits, although the Supreme Court has greatly restricted such actions.)
"But lawlessness and egregious misstatements of the law1 are hallmarks of the trump regime . . ."
