Forgive us . . . But TKC LURVES local news war stories and this one is apropos for #TBT . . . Also, we searched FOREVER for this screenshot in our archives and finally found it . . . Making an AI version would have been much easier.
As for the local news game scribbling . . .
In a typically progressive post intended to slam Prez Trump . . . We pulled this great local story about a formerly powerful politico & MSNOW pundit flexing whilst she was just a small potatoes cowtown elected official . . . Here's a quote and more context from newsman Dave Helling . . .
"A tourist captured the abduction on videotape, and offered it to WDAF-TV, the station where I worked. The station aired a segment of the tape, which showed the kidnapping, on the six o’clock news.
"Kansas City police and prosecutors demanded the full video from the station. Nope, the newsroom said. It offered a copy of the aired segment, but said authorities would need a subpoena for the whole cassette.
"Not good enough for the cops, and McCaskill, who was then the county prosecutor and in full war-on-crime mode. Police got a search warrant from a judge and, after a confrontation in the newsroom around 10 p.m., seized the full tape.
"The station sued. The warrant, it said, violated the federal Privacy Protection Act, which protects journalists from most searches, with just a few exceptions. A federal judge later ruled in the station’s favor, saying the police had failed to cite any of those exceptions when they sought the warrant.
"An appeals court overturned the ruling in 1996, almost a year after the incident. The cops didn’t need to explicitly claim any exception while obtaining the warrant, it said, because the law didn’t require it.
"By then, the controversy had withered and the station declined to file further appeals."
