First and foremast . . . TKC is glad the coach is feeling better and we wish him excellent health and full recovery.
Additionally . . .
This latest medical incident highlights many recent heart scares suffered by Coach Self in his high pressure job and begs the question:
Shouldn't conscientious fans want him to retire and avoid any further risks?!?
It seems like we're all kind of glorifying the "passion for the game" angle and forgetting this is a real person who obviously feels very real chest pain during the course of his job.
Certainly . . . He's entitled to make his own decisions but let's not forget: Successful ballers are infamous for never wanting give up and in retrospect the public always feels bad about letting them go on too long.
Nobody likes watching so many punch drunk boxers and/or the devastation that that CTE can play on the lives of pro-football players . . . We might be watching the same kind of thing here and most local sports newsies seem unwilling to ask any tough questions on the topic.
Of course we'll share a more upbeat report . . .
“It is what it is,” Self said. “Right before our team was taking off, I started feeling some abnormal chest issues. I'm thinking, based on what I had before, it can't be good.”
Self said doctors determined he was dehydrated and experiencing AFib, a heart rhythm issue he has dealt with previously.
“I was experiencing some stuff,” he said. “I was not severely, but very dehydrated and I got AFib. I just had a bout with that, so that was pretty significant in a very small snippet of time, but it was enough that I couldn’t get on a plane.”
